“I always feel like somebody’s watching me…and I have no privacy”. Lol if you love music from the 80’s you will most definitely remember this one by Rockwell.Was Rockwell just being paranoid? What inspired this song? Could someone have really been watching him? Could someone be watching us now? And if so, who? So as I’m sure you all have figured out what this week’s blog is about, let’s get into it. Well folks plain and simple…WE ARE BEING WATCHED! We are being watched, our phones are being tapped, the FBI are monitoring our emails and electronic communications. Now you know I would be remiss to not bring a movie into this. The movie for this week is “1984”. Written by George Orwell in 1949.

The book was written in 1949, however the actual movie was released in 1984 Starring John Hurt as Winston Smith. Plot: After the Atomic War the world is divided into 3 states. London is a city in Oceania, ruled by a party who has total control over all it’s citizens. Winston Smith is one of the bureaucrats, rewriting history in one of the departments. The Ministry of Truth broadcasts endlessly to the population through its inescapable network of telescreens. These devices, which invade all aspects of peoples’ lives, are also capable of monitoring their every word and action. Sound familiar? There are agents that work for the party called the “Thought Police” whose singular goal is to eliminate any thought crimes

Because words are so powerful, This slogan was constantly seen and played ceaselessly to the masses. If you recall President Bush once said: WAR WILL PAVE THE WAY FOR PEACE! Now remember this book was written in 1949, long before Bush was president. There are numerous ways that the government watches us. Through the NSA( National Security Agency) that spies on us through our Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and whatever social media they choose. This is supposedly illegal, however they do it anyway. When asked for a statement of his intentions for his book, Orwell said ” My novel 1984 is not intended as an attack on socialism, or on the British Labour Party…I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I do believe (allowing of course for the fact that the book is a satire) that something resembling it could arrive. So what do we do with these facts? Why we ignore them, for not to ignore them would mean that we have to do something and since the majority of the population is asleep…..

Think about it, every time you use your credit and loyalty cards, your purchases are being tracked and analyzed. When you use your cell phone, they reveal your location, and companies want to retain and use that information. Also NSA can legally listen to your conversations if you’re talking to someone who’s out of the country. While you watch TV, Sitting at your computer, even when you go for a health care visit, they ask for your insurance card and your drivers license. They scan them and enter the info into programs like Officemate, this is just one more way they keep tabs on us. I read that Samsung TV’s are eavesdropping on their owners. If you have a smart TV, you can turn on a voice command feature that saves you the trouble of finding the remote, pushing buttons and scrolling through menus. However making that feature work requires the television to listen to everything you say. And what you say isn’t just processed by the television; it may be forwarded over the internet for remote processing, they say this is literally Orwellian ( Orwell).

So once again, when watching movies look for keys, don’t just watch for entertainment purposes, because these are definitely the last days. There are all kinds of truths in the movies that we watch, even cartoons. And no worries, I will be here to keep you updated and informed.
