A truly inspiring movie that everyone can relate to in some way. Everyone that sees this movie may not understand it or even like it. Me…I loved it! Did I mention that this movie was inspired by true events? That makes it even more interesting. Okay, okay, okay let’s get to it! Tonight’s movie is da-da-da-dah! Peaceful Warrior! As if you hadn’t already figured that out, lol. It’s based on the book “Way Of The Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman. Dan is an ambitious gymnast, aspiring for the Olympic Gold Medal. Now Dan like most teenagers is full of a lot of negative emotions; aggression, anger, fear, frustration, peer pressure and to top it off he has the biggest ego. With all these negative thoughts running through his head, he has problems sleeping. One night after a very troubling nightmare Dan wanders into this all night gas station that looks like something from an old movie. There he meets “Socrates” played by Nick Nolte, whom by the way we never learn his real name. After a few words between them Dan turns to leave, then turns back around as if to say something else and Socrates is no longer on the ground, he is up on top of the roof! Mindblowing to say the least. How did he get up there in the blink of an eye?

This movie is so important in how it tells of the battle we all have within us and like I said before Dan was struggling with a lot of emotions and the only thing that seemed important to him was being in the Olympics, seeing Socrates suddenly up on the roof intrigued Dan, he is moderately impressed with him and has to know how he was able to get up there in such short a time. Socrates takes Dan under his wing and teaches him about life and new values. Dan realizes that there is something more to life and training than what he’s always believed. Now I begin to see why this movie is called Peaceful Warrior. There is a war within all of us, our positive self (the ALLAH in us) versus the reaction to positive (Satan) or negative in us. No war can be won with agitation in the mind ( calmness is power). The first condition to be able to fight is to be peaceful. Socrates urges Dan to “throw out the trash” No not from an actual garbage can, the trash that is in the mind, the things that block us from being the great beings that we are. Trash is the only thing that’s keeping you from the only thing that matters- this moment, here…now.

The thing about any teenager up to at least the age of 25, is that they think they know everything already, and Dan is no different. He truly believes that the only thing going on is what he sees in front of him. Socrates said “You can live a whole lifetime without ever being awake.” So true! I mean just because we get up, go to work, walk around, drive our cars, we are still asleep! We have no idea what is actually going on around us. I will say it has mostly to do with what we eat, what we watch on TV, what music we listen to. All things that help to dull our Pineal Gland ( a pea-sized conical mass of tissue behind the third ventricle of the brain) what is known as the third eye. So back to Dan and his ego. Even at his gymnastic practice Dan is the best in his class, he knows it, his friends know it, and even his coach knows it. Dan keeps trying to do a triple consecutive flip that his coach tells him no one will ever be able to do that, of course that does not stop him from trying.

Some have compared this movie to the Karate Kid concept, and it does have that Mr Miyagi vibe lol. Back to the story…Soc’s philosophy is this: that one must live entirely in the present moment. One of my favorite scenes was in the park, and Dan said I have to be somewhere can this be quick, and Soc said yes and threw him into the water, lol he told him to clear his mind and what better way to do it. That showed him that as he was falling he had no other thoughts except that moment of falling, the here and now.

Now this movie has been out since 2006, almost 10 years ago, so excuse me while I spoil things a bit. And as I do, that should not stop you from seeing this movie, it really is that good. Soc tells Dan he’s missing out on everything that’s going on, Dan says there is nothing going on. Socrates grabs him in a certain spot on his shoulder and it seems like time freezes, and all of a sudden Dan is aware of everything that is happening in the park all at the same time! Soc says to him “There’s never nothing going on, take the trash out of your mind, and experience this moment.” Socrates said it took a lifetime of practice to lose his mind, to lose the way we’ve been conditioned to think. Some call it brainwashed, i’m glad my brain has been washed, that I am awake and see things for what they are. Bob Marley said it best “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.” Dan gradually learns to appreciate every moment, to view the journey toward a goal as more meaningful and significant than the attainment, (however I will say that they are both meaningful, however the journey makes you appreciate the attainment) To pay attention to that which he is doing- thus increasing his gymnastic skills; and ( to a slightly lesser extent) control himself. One day Dan drives recklessly on his motorcycle and collides with a car causing his femur bone to shatter in 17 places. He is rushed to a hospital, where a metal bar is placed in his leg. Now I know what you’re thinking “that’s the end of his career” that’s the same thing his coach was thinking, which hurt Dan because of his lack of faith. In a weak moment he sees himself trying to commit suicide, and he comes face to face with his own ego. He resumes his tutelage under Socrates, and eventually he is restored to full health and strength, while his coordination improves and his mind is set entirely on the present moment.
So that is it for the spoilers, if you want to know what happens you must watch the movie yourself. Just remember that yes this was based on a real life event with Dan Millman, this is not fiction. When we free our minds and take out the trash we will be amazed by the things we can do! For some of us our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? When actually who are you not to be? Our playing small does not serve the world. We are all meant to shine, as children do, and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others inspiration to do the same.
So on that note I will close out by reminding y’all that when you’re watching movies to look for those keys, and if there are none than it wasn’t worth watching now was it? Until the next time…Have a peaceful nights rest and a happy morning rise!
